The role of genitive case (родительный падеж) is to show where the object belongs or what it relates to. Genitive used to express possession, dates and after certain prepositions such as c (from). The nouns in the genitive answer such questions Of whom? Of what?

Genitive of singular nouns:

• Add -а to masculine nouns ending in a hard consonant
• Replace neuter nouns ending -o with -а.
• Replace masculine nouns ending -й / -ь and neuter nouns ending -е / -ие with -я.
• Replace feminine nouns ending -я / -ь with -и.
• Replace feminine nouns ending -a with -ы.

Exceptions:

~ You should use the ending -и instead of -ы in feminine nouns ending in hard -к / -г / -х / -ж / -ш.
~ You should use the ending -а instead of -я in masculine nouns ending in -ч / -щ.
~ Masculine nouns ending -а / -я follow the same pattern as feminine nouns ending in -а / -я.


Genitive of plural nouns:

• Add -oв to masculine nouns ending in a consonant.
• Replace masculine nouns ending -й with -ев.
• Add -ей to feminine nouns ending in -ь and masculine nouns ending in -ь / -ж / -ч / -ш / -щ.
• Add -й to neuter nouns ending in -e.
• Neuter nouns ending in -o and feminine and masculine nouns ending in -а, -я lose their endings.
