The word Y can be both a pronoun and an adverb.
As an adverby can be translated as "there"
Example: Je vais en France et j'y vais chaque mois.
(I go to France and I go there every month.)
As a pronoun y replaces:
most often inanimate words precedeed by à and its variations (au, à la, aux)
The place in the sentence: y is always placed before a verb
Je pense à mes parents. J'y pense souvent. (penser à quelqu'un)
Je vais au cinéma. J'y vais chaque week-end. (= "there" + aller à quelque part)
