Two basic elements of a grammatical sentence are a subject and a verb: Ik werk ´I work´. Ik is the personal pronoun and we use them as a simple substitute for a person or thing.

Singular:
Ik (I)
Jij/Je (You, informal)
U (You, formal)
Hij, Zij/Ze, Het (He, She, It)

Plural:
Wij/We (We)
Jullie (You, informal)
U (You, formal)
Zij/Ze (They)

Notes:
1. The singular form for she is the same as the plural form for they: zij/ze
2. The subject pronoun het is used for het-words in the singular, hij is used for de-words in the
singular, and zij/ze is used for nouns in the plural.
3. The Dutch rarely refer to a singular object
using the personal pronoun zij/ze. Instead they use hij.
4. Some of the pronouns have stressed and unstressed forms, such as jij versus je, zij versus ze, and wij versus we. Whether to use the stressed or the unstressed form depends on context and intonation, so what part of the sentence one wants to emphasize.

2. Het boek ligt daar. > Het ligt daar.
De auto is rood. > Hij is rood.
De wegen zijn glad. > Ze zijn glad.


3. Mijn telefoon is weg. > Hij is weg.
De broek ligt in de wasmachine. > Hij ligt in de wasmachine.


4. Je bent volgende week op 15 Januari jarig.
Jij bent bijna jarig.
We gaan naar het dierenpark in Parijs.
Wij gaan samen naar het dierenpark.
Ze is een lieve meid.
Zij is een lieve meid.


1. Ze is het mooiste meisje van de klas.
